ER316/316L has the same analysis as ER316, except that the carbon content is limited to a maximum of 0.03% in order to reduce the possibility of formation of intergranular carbide precipitation.

ER316/316L is primarily used for welding low-carbon molybdenum-bearing austenitic alloys. ER316/316L is not as strong at elevated temperatures as ER316H. Because of the molybdenum, this product has increased creep resistance at elevated temperatures, as well as pitting resistance in marine and industrial environments.

Feature

  • Minimal carbon not greater than .02% to protect against corosion.
  • Recommended for welding AISI 316 stainless steel applications when high creep strength at elevated temperatures where resistance to pitting by corrosive liquids is needed.
  • It is also used for Cr steels with max. 19% Cr. It is used for TIG-welding.
  • The lower ferrite level of this nominal composition reduces the rate of corrosion in certain media and is suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Used for welding low carbon molybdenum-bearing austenitic alloys.
  • This low carbon alloy is not as strong at elevated temperatures as ER316.
  • AWS A5.9, Welding current DECEP
  • Used for service temperatures up to 400°C (750°F).
